irish gold

with two redheaded daughters, an irish gypsy as one of my long ago granmothers, and a love of the sea and all things green is it any wonder that i fell for these lucky little leprechans?
this morning was quite the flurry as i added a final dusting of green glitter to 10 tiny fingernails, served up neon green pancakes (mom these pancakes look scary!),
and posted a few more green things in my shop all by 8:30.

tomorrow i am teaching a reduce, reuse, recycle class. totally going green here in many different ways. thinking about the all green salad the hubby suggested for dinner....

the irish gold petite art kit i listed in my shop for march with some other green goodies. fern wool button cards, the new vintage green paper packs, shamrock wool bundle, and an 'i grow things' crepe paper flower kit. hope you are feelin the green today, julie

wonderful art nest weekend

here are the beautiful women i got to spend the art nest weekend with. i look at each of their faces now and feel so grateful for a few days of their lives spent with candice and me in the snowy mountains of utah. front left to right: Cassondra, Natalie, Laurie, Lorie, Caryn, Courtney, Julie, Beth, Gloria, Kelly Rae, Jane, me middle row: Kari, Debbie, Karen, Candice, Britt, Michelle, Denise, Deb, Jolee, Lorraine, Allyson back row: Mati, Maya, Heidi, Susan, Shelley, Jodi, Diane. i loaded the photo big so you can click on it to see better. :)
the gals that have sites on the web i have linked for you to visit. enjoy...

the day before everyone arrived our families were at the cabin setting up beds, carrying in food and supplies. both our husbands took most of the week off to help us get ready and to take care of everything at home while we were at the nest. what an amazing gift... thank you Matt and Rich.

here are a few photos of the what we had waiting for everyone to arrive.

we had four days ahead of us to spend with each other, creating art, and sharing our lives. each person came with their own story waiting to unfold. i believe for artists, art is the truest expression of our hearts. in those four days it seemed as if time stopped for us, focusing all our energy towards connecting with each other and our art.
candice and i have hosted the art nest five times now and before it has been a large part about the art for me. i desperately needed to learn new things to find out what was inside me.
this time was so different. i wanted to create this wonderful experience for someone else. i loved watching the art that flowed out of each person, cooking delicious meals for them, and hearing about their happiness and struggles. i am not sure i even know what has changed inside me. i just know i have been waiting for this my whole life.
the first night at our welcome nesters meeting candice and i both talked about what we hoped each person would experience attending the nest, an opportunity to open our hearts, to nourish and heal, and to feel gratitude. michelle took this fun picture of us wearing the aprons noelle made for us to match our toolkits.

such a big part of the art nest is the teachers that come and give to each of us a day to explore something new. they are generous and open, patient and caring. it feels as if you get to see inside their studio for a day and experience their life's work.
kelly rae was our first teacher. she set the perfect tone for the retreat. on each person's kit she taped a message. each one was different and personal, it gave us each permission to begin where we were. mine said 'the creative community needs your vision....don't be shy.' the art from kelly rae's class blew me away.

you can see here photos taken the night we all displayed our work.

mati began teaching on friday with the sun streaming in the window over her art. i am so drawn to her fanciful images and gorgeous saturation of color. i love that her art evokes such happy, childlike emotions from me. everywhere in the room there was brilliant color and spontaneous laughter. it was wonderful.

i decided to work on a smaller piece with flowers inspired from some funky fabric kari brought. i will be that little bird in my garden this summer.

jane taught the class on saturday. i have taken one other class from jane and was so amazed at her process working with metal pipe. she had a whole table filled with her jewelry at the artist sale it was so hard to choose! i can finally solder without burning everything so i had so much fun starting a ring.
a few more photos i couldn't resist posting. thank you all for an amazing experience i will never forget. i miss you, julie

just a week until the art nest. . .

with just one week to go until the art nest
candice and i are busy mama birds getting all the last minute details ready to go.

it is much more fun fussing over the pretty details like these tablecloth tool kits i have been sewing for everyone than keeping track of how many towels we have at the chalet. a selection of beads to use in Jane Wynn's class, wrapped up on a pretty tag.
paintbrushes, pencils and a vintage paper notepad to use in the collage classes by Kelly Rae Roberts and Mati McDonough.

hand covered vintage wool buttons close each kit.

it has been snowing every day this week so we will have a lovely fresh dusting of white over everything. i wanted to share a few images of all the excitement since that is all i have been doing for several weeks now.

when i get back i will be posting the march petite art kit in my etsy shop, 'irish gold', until then i have been busy making 30 little art trades and a few things to sell at the artist sale friday night.

these little birds will be on the cover of each little handmade notebook made by my daughter marina. she will be posting some little ones on her etsy shop soon.

here is the invitation to the artist sale, can't wait for that!

and the beautiful packet made from ledger paper cassondra made for us! it unfolds to the schedule, a list of what to bring and a gorgeous card from each of the teachers.
just 7 more days to go.....

cupid's kiss

all thoughts are now turned to sugared pink frosting, sweet little hearts, and cupid's valentine kisses.

i possibly should have given you a bit more warning here.....
this may be a bit more pink than most people can take in one post.

i just love valentines day and the chocolate treats for my sweeties.
cupid's kiss is my february art kit, filled with pretty pinks now in my shop.
who doesn't love a little note on a tiny tag decorated with blossoms, or a hand written valentine message on one of these darling valentine cards.

marina painted these darling valentines in her 'love me' the illustrated pocket valentine collection.

can't quite get over the mad kitty!
and who doesn't love flowers on valentines day?

just a few more days and then the month of february begins on the a year of color blog with melissa from a garden of pink shadows. doesn't that sound enchanting....

january blues

it has been wonderful this month working on a year of color with kari. i have realized i really create a lot with blue. it is a color of such calmness for me.
with a deep coating of snow outside that doesn't seem to be melting the winter white and blue palette suit me very well.

i can't resist posting a few of the photos i have been taking. i have the whole weekend off with the promise of beautiful sunshine ahead. i'm dreaming of hours and hours in my studio with the boys gone on a winter scout campout. i'm smiling a bit...

winter frost

january has begun with a new frosting of snow. i love beginning a new year, it seems as though every day stretching forward is fresh and filled with wishes.

it is a time for dreaming up new plans and leaving behind the used ones. 'meet the robinsons' is such a charming movie, the ending is my new motto: keep moving forward.
two new things for me this month:
i will be the guest designer for artsymama's new inspiration blog 'a year of color'
i chose the blue and white month as i am continually drawn to these colors. i will be posting photos, a craft tutorial, and ideas all month.

my etsy shop even gets a few new plans for the year. i will be featuring a limited number of petite art kits, one for each month of the year. january's kits is 'winter frost' i have gathered together a collection of beautiful things to celebrate the frosting of winter. inside the peek.a.boo box lined with vintage flocked wallpaper you will find a collection of vintage trims, millinery stems, and fabrics all tied up with a sprig of flocked winter buds.

february's kit 'cupid's kiss' is a sweet pink and white kit i will be listing next monday. two other new additions for the new year will be color themed vintage wool bundles, and pretty bits, tiny art treats always under $2.

happiest new year wishes, julie

Monday, December 29

ok, i had a bit of a heart attack today.....

so i am in my pjs still (hey, i am on vacation!) i threw on my big coat with the fur collar and my slippers and tried to sneak out to the mailbox this morning without my neighbors noticing. my box was stuffed clear to the top with envelopes, a little bit late padded mailers with things i ordered off etsy, and one big magazine from somerset. i could barely wiggle it all out. trying not to slip on the ice i sneaked back in the house and dumped the loot on the table.

envelopes, bills, the dvd i ordered-i think, and the new somerset life.
i tore off the plastic wrapping and let the paper cover fall to the floor and there it was.....the reason for my bit of a heart attack. i am on the cover of the new issue of somerset life!

**insert unabashed horn tooting here**

well, not me actually but my beautiful velvet valentine. noone breathed a word of this secret to me, this is the coolest surprise ever! it is one of the valentines i made for my little love notes article.

on page 34 here is my little dancing marie antoinette compact, and the tiny silver tinsel and felt kit i made in a vintage bird mold.

and here in the 'things we love' spread my love notes valentine kit.

this issue is packed with gorgeous photos of so many lovely, sweet things. you are going to love it. i heart mondays after today. xo julie
