artfest favorites. . .

so either this is going to be the longest post ever and you won't be able to scroll all the way down, or i will wear out and not post every single favorite photo i took at artfest this past weekend and have to add some later.
i am still just floating after such an amazing weekend in port townsend attending artfest with teesha and tracy moore.
it was an outstanding event and i absolutely loved it!!
everything was green and wet with rain, the trees had burst into bloom and the sea was rolling grey up on the sand. it was a feast for the senses. candice and i stayed in one of the officers houses with kecia and jenn from the last art nest. the big old house had radiators that creaked and whistled in the night. a huge built in cabinet in the dining room held all the dishes and a tiny little bathroom had a bit of a shower that dribbled out hot or cold water depending on your luck. it was charming and perfect.




candice and i took all three classes together and we were absolutely delighted to meet annie lockhart our first teacher. a kind soul filled with grace and beauty. i felt as if i had just found out i had another sister. such laughter and emotion in her class. the pieces everyone created were stunning.
i don't really like wall hangings so i created a little book that opened to a tiny porcelain doll nestled in a frame filled with the inside of an old quilt. the colors of cream and silver were especially restful to me and i enjoyed so much putting all the little pieces together.



here is the piece candice created. she used an old canvas fishing bag as the base and glued an old photo frame on top. the pod of pearls and the wrapped dried daffodils were the last things she glued on.



it was so fun to meet and sit next to liz lamoreux here with annie.



nina's class gatherings was on the second day. at my first art retreat ever i took a class with nina and have been drawn to her work ever since. the raw beauty of nature encased within the pages of her books and wrapped about with wire in her jewelry has always felt like magic to me. our class was filled with amazing artists, it was spectacular to walk around and look at what each person was doing. i got to meet cori kindred for the first time and adored her little paper clay mushroom she put in one of her little frames.

my cover is titled uplifted voices. here are the two pieces i finished. i have left the ribbon long to the left so i could attach the back cover when i had it designed. i am going to leave the inside pages loose and just tie them all together.


lisa and renee after making our book covers. renee used lovely old sewing pieces to go in her frames and they took my breath away.



our last day of classes we took wallpaper people with anahata. i was totally intimidated to work on a 6 foot panel of paper and almost dreaded the challenge. i kept trying to talk myself into making a mini wallpaper person. i took anahata's symbolic icons class in february at the nest so i did know i would be in good hands and i went for it!

anahata has the gift of being an incredible, intuitive artist, and a fabulous teacher able to encourage each artist to produce their best work. it is a rare and fantastic combination. here are the two wallpaper people candice and i made. her handsome man and my girl with the songbird throat and the universe inside her.

i had such a wonderful time connecting with friends far and wide.

cassondra came over for chipolte brownines one night and after some spooky ghost stories i took her back to the dorms.



darling jenn and candice one morning just coming back from a run. michelle and i on the steps to our house sunday morning before driving home.



vendors night was shopping mayhem. fabulous original art from all over the globe. so much inspiration it was hard to take it all in. this picture is of annie lockhart and all her gorgeous things at her table. i bought a beautiful piece by katie kendrick that i am just thrilled with, i wish i knew the name of the piece. . .

and two very cool zines that theo ellsworth put together. i just knew my kids would dig his style. i was right on. . . this is the inside cover to capacity #7 titled 'a witch's bedtime story' my total favorite!!



show and tell night was overwhelming, so much art everywhere! here is a piece by michelle allen that i just adored.
i don't even know who she is, if anyone does please help me find her.


and here are tracy moores journals. i loved the four of them together, so manly!


i flew home with candice after it was all over and we talked and talked on the plane about all the wonderful experiences we had at artfest. i am doing a whole journal page titled 'you know you are a hick when. . .' just to document all the funny things we got ourselves into. (the man-kilt store in seattle for one)
today i am still bubbling over with the energy of it all, wonderous.

how to get ready for Artfest in ONE day. . .

for those of you who have been packed for days with the supplies for each class in zip lock bags and your trades beautifully packaged with ribbons in a lovely handmade bag you do not need to read this post. . .

my day will go as follows:
* call and ring nancy my gym buddie at 4:45am to let her know i won't be going to the gym this morning as i stayed up till 1:30 am getting my trades ready to go
* get the kids off to school, sort and start the wash, load the dishwasher, vacuum the whole house, make bed, shower, get dressed and ready for errands.
* call karen my mary kay gal and order lipstick and powder (i'm all out and she delivers!)
* take livi with me to the bank and to take grandma to the doctors.
* have lunch at the care center with grandma then take livi to kindergarten.
* stop off at the pharmacy, pick up mail and papers.
* head home and print out my supply lists for my classes
* more laundry
* start packing supplies in my art suitcase
* make something yummy for dinner for sweet hubby who will be taking care of everything while i am gone (including cat about to deliver kittens and our four baby chicks 10 days old)
* keep working on laundry, wash favorite jeans and hang out to dry
* call candice to get her list of stuff to bring.
* call candice again and ask her what else i should bring.
* fret over the supplies i have packed for my classes stuff in a bit more stuff. . . repeat as needed.
* have dinner with the family
* send my teenager out to get gas in the car and load me some new tunes on my ipod
* check-in online and confirm car reservations
* homework and stories then tuck into bed for prayers
* more laundry
* start packing clothes and go over list one more time.

i won't be able to sleep much i am afraid i am so excited.

it seems like such a crazy day i know, but i haven't known if i would be able to go and it seemed pointless to start packing if i would be staying home.
grandma has been back and forth to the doctors and the emergency room several times in the last two weeks. grandpa passed away at christmas and she has been so lonely without him. she finally decided she could not live on her own any more and we found a wonderful assisted living center for her that she moved into on saturday. it has been heartbreaking for us all. she is settled now in her new room and we had lunch today with her and it was delicious. i feel like she will be in such good hands. it will actually be a wonderful feeling to lift off in the plane over the clouds and go to the sea where the ocean can wash over me and heal my heart.

so if you see me at artfest and want one of these crazy retro mushroom packs candice and i are making come on over! we'll be making chipolte chili brownies in our house at night, staying up late making art, walking along the ocean early in the morning, in the early sun, and enjoying the company of so many amazing artists.

at long last. . .my class with Pam

i am so excited to be finally posting about my class with pam garrison at the art nest. it has been too long and it is wonderful to be able to have a quiet evening to be able to write about her class and post some photos. one of my favorite things at the art nest was i got to sit down and look through pam's journals. her books feel so alive in your hands and her pages are an amazing feast of color and design.

our class packet from pam was gorgeous, a cellophane flower envelope filled with a little book she illlustrated with all the steps to creating our own visual journals. i sewed a bit of an embroidered wool baby blanket on one of my pages for a wee pocket to hold pam's booklet. also in our envelope was a scrumptious selection of pam's vintage wallpapers tied up with ribbons and flowers and several of her wonderful postcards made from the pages of her journals.





here is the pam working in her book, melting wax crayons to coat the page. her table all set up for class, just look at all the fabulous art materials just waiting to be used. . .



i love old ledgers and seriously thought about using one until i found this book. it is called 'dash and dart, two fawns' and in light of the fun woodland theme at artfest this year i decided to use this old discarded book instead for my journal.
here you can see the binding and the cover with the cool waxed linen thread that we used to sew the page signatures in the book.


all the books everyone created in pam's class all lined up by the fireplace. so many cool books and all so different!


my book has taken on a life of its own. i have been writing and sketching ideas, collaging pages, and gluing in all sorts of inspiriation. here are a couple of pages so far, i am having so much fun!

the Art Nest. . .part 2

our second day at the art nest was in amy hanna's class 'rejuvenated jewels'.
the table she set up was stunning! so many beautiful pieces of jewelry. can you imagine how it was to look through her whole jewelry collection? i was in awe over each elegant piece! she displayed many pieces to sell and her favorite pieces she wears herself to give us ideas for our own creations. this picture of amy teaching was taken by melinda downing at the art nest.


the table was draped with a length of burlap and covered with a runner of hand dyed crepe paper decorated with sweet millinery flowers. each vintage velvet jewelry box held treasures and jewels put together with gorgeous chains, gems, and lovely vintage pieces. it was breathtaking! we had a hard time finishing breakfast and beginning the class as everyone was trying to decide which piece to buy!


then amy pulled out a box filled with baggies of vintage parts we could buy, a freebie box of bits and pieces, and a whole selection of chain and pretty bits from her friend Li' K Designs.
this is my favorite part of the necklace i bought from amy, look at the lovely little vintage flower nestled in the old watch face.
she had some beautiful marie antoinette looking ladies cast from silver and stamped with her name to add to each of her pieces. a perfect finishing touch!



and here is the burlap bag amy made to wrap our jewelry in. fabulous isn't it!


Once the buying flurry settled down we all began designing our pieces. amy has an unbeliveable knack for looking at a design someone is working on and making suggestions how to unify the pieces and add interest with chain, vinitage clasps, and stones. i loved her idea how to attach a vintage rhinestone clasp to my necklace that had one chain on one side and two chains on the other. the little bead bridge works perfectly!


i made these earings first with vintage pieces and beads i had collected. i was so excited to use the little rhinestone rondelles. i soldered a little ball at one end of the ear wire and shaped and hammered them before attaching the chain and dangle with a jump ring.
the great tragedy was i wore these earings out snowmobiling the next day and one came off and was smashed by my snow boot! i don't have another little pink disc, so for now they are awaiting repairs. :(


this is the necklace i made using the rhinestone piece from candice and a few bits from amy's junk box! to attach the separate pieces i drilled out the rhinestone and right though the soldered base to make a hole for attaching the dangle and both chains.


i also made these earings and this black necklace with a bezel from a class i took from stephanie lee . no idea what i will put in the bezel yet, but i love the tiny little man dangling from the clasp. . .



i still have more to post about the art nest, pam's class, the artist sale, and sledding! i'll get busy.
